A Reminder

I was pretty excited Monday when I came back from my morning reading and saw there were about a dozen comments on my article but I was terribly disappointed and frankly, angry when I found that only Audre’s had any relevance at all, and even that was primarily personal encouragement.

A lot of what I write is history based speculation on the future often informed by geopolitics, not least because it fascinates me. All of those conclusions are tentative and thus can be debated. And in the best tradition of drunken late night college boys that is what I wish. I’m sure I’m at least 80% wrong but which 20% is correct. That’s the stuff of endless discussions.

Monday’s article took a lot of wrangling to get it to say what I wanted, even approximately, about six hours plus the background information gathering. That’s fine,  I enjoy doing it. But I’ll tell you a secret, if you want a post on our favorite singers, well, we can do that, it’ll take less than an hour to put together, total.  But it’s not what I want to do. We live in troubled times, most likely as fraught as the 1930s were. I do not see it as the end times but as an American Renaissance. Again. Just as the period before the Revolution, the Civil War, and  World War II were.

That I’d like to discuss. The Great Anglo-American Song Book (and it is great) is of less interest to me.

And it’s my damned blog. It’s not a democracy, it’s not even a crowned republic, it’s mine, and I’m very happy to welcome you all in. But like everything, it has rules, and apparently, they need restating.

  1. Off topic comments will be deleted without warning or discussion. I’m not hard nosed about it, stay within ~30° or so of the topic (either agree or disagree, of course) and you’ll be fine. Just don’t go wandering down every rabbit hole.
  2. 3d time is the charm. Get deleted 3 times and most likely you’ll get banned.

This is not a rule but a hint, if, like me, you tend to write 400+ word comments, try not to. Everybody, including me, looks at them and goes TL;dr. This has no penalty, but almost no usefulness either. I need to remember, like others to Keep It Simple, Stupid.

I’d also note, that lots of people read here, and never comment. Please do, it’s by far the best way to see what people want to read. Over the years our commentariat has become ingrown and needs new blood. We are OK with disagreement, in fact, it helps our thinking.  So, if you think our reasoning is nonsense, say so, but tell us why.

Have a great day, and think about this some. Audre has a great post for tomorrow and with luck, my Friday one will be interesting. See ya there.
